Methodist Conference

Sue Cresswell report from Methodist Conference June 2023

Synod report Saturday September 9th 2023. Shebbear College.

I travelled with Rev Stephen and Rev Margaret Johnson. There was tea and coffee and cookies on arrival !

We made our way to the Chapel for a service of holy communion. Rev Dan Haylett (chair of District) and school chaplain Rev Donna Leigh led worship with several school pupils reading prayers and readings 1Corinthians 13:1-13 and Matthew 15:21-28.

We then made our way to the Assembly Hall for initial business.

There was a reflection on Conference 2023 from various people who went.

The theme this year is ‘Hidden treasures’.

Lay communions – they are in the process of changing the formula of how many people in a Circuit are able to give lay communions. He new formula aims to be more qualative not quantative and more contextual.

District Policy Committee – Margaret Fogarty confirmed that Rev Dan Haylett would be Chair of Plymouth & Exeter District and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly District jointly with Rev Loraine Mellor for one year. Dan has been appointed from 2024 for 5 years as Chair of the two joint Districts.

After lunch there was the opportunity to go to the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training in the Sport’s Hall.

In Assembly room there was conversation with those engaged in different forms of ministry – there were 3 students from Queens who talked about their experience of rural ministry. 40% of Methodist churches are rural.

There was an update from the Cuttack Diocese. See District E-news.

Update on REV7 –

“Bloomin’ Church” 18th -21st October at Devonport – Anne Middleton.

Chrissie Slaney and Julian Albrow talked about the Safeguarding Audit Report. Chrissie said they are looking at the results of the audit – it highlighted the weaknesses and strengths. They are working towards centralised records.

Always a great day at Synod seeing what is going on in the District.
